Blog Action Day is held on 16th October and the focus is getting bloggers from all over the world blogging about one important topic. This year the topic is ‘Food’ as the date coincides with World Food Day. Past topics have included water, climate change and poverty.
As is very evident from this blog, I love food. It is what is on my mind when I wake up in the morning and it is what I think about when I go to bed. I am not sure of the exact point at which food became my obsession but I think it was post University when I had a bit more money and the opportunity to broaden my mind and menu beyond baked potatoes and toast.
Food is a topic that I love to read about, watch programmes on and shop for. I find it a pleasure to cook for others or to be cooked for, and going out for a meal is a welcomed bit of pampering.
I must confess that I don’t like just any kind of food. I like to know where my food has come from and I enjoy the chance to use my skills to make meals from raw ingredients, rather than a meal out of a box and ping it in the microwave.
I try to make the most of local and seasonal produce and I find it exciting to see what I can create, to discover new flavour combinations and to try out new ingredients.
I am not monetary rich but I do feel wealthy when it comes to the variety and plentiful access to food that I have. We are extremely lucky to live in a country where most of us have enough to eat, in some cases a bit too much! Not everyone in the world is as lucky and it is easy to forget that starvation, poverty and malnutrition is the normality for some. For this reason I want to end this by taking the time to consciously appreciate food, the pleasure it gives me and to endeavour to not take it for granted.
